Since I'm moving and all my good headphones are still packed (HD 600, HD 598, M50x, V-80, SR225), I ordered the Sennheiser HD 4.30G White Around Ear headphones. They were cheap, had decent reviews, and that's all I need now. I received them in a few days and was very surprised at how good these "cheap" headphones sounded. I thought let me see if there are any cheap little headphone amps out there that can make them even better since my amps/DACs are boxed too. Received this amp 2 days later with Prime and it was boxed to take the hit out of the tank. I've read all the reviews on this little device and doubt they're even accurate. I plugged it in and turned it on. It takes about 30 seconds for the light to stop flashing and the tubes to warm up. I opened the J River Media Center 20 and the Lossless music folder. I don't know why, but I turned on AC/DC - Kicked in the Teeth by Powerage (AC/DC's second favorite album). I was overwhelmed by the high frequencies and immediately decided to stop listening and let the unit run in for at least a couple of hours. I ended up letting it break overnight, probably 12 or more hours. I figured it probably wouldn't work and was grateful I kept the box so I could return it. The next day I started the same song again and was amazed at how much the amp leveled out. Everything sounded warmer and clearer. I remember a few years ago I had a cheap tube amp and it hummed when nothing was playing. This device is absolutely silent when there is silence. I switched the songs to The Doors - Riders on the Storm. The storm was raging and the mix was amazing, everything was in place. I even heard Morrison almost whisper Riders on the Storm towards the end of the song and then mumble something before the closing vocal. The sound this amp produced reminded me of the first time I heard it as a kid on my uncle's Sansui deck with JBL tower speakers in the mid 70's. Very warm and I guess you would call it vintage these days. I've listened to everything else from Rage Against the Machine to Fleetwood Mac - Rumors to The Beatles (Dr. Ebbets MFSL Half Speed Japan Mixes), Sgt Pepper, Revolver and Abbey. Road and they never sounded so good. All in all, this amp costs $55. Is it as good as my Valhalla 2 with HD 600? nope But it shouldn't be like that, plus 6 times less. For people who are just starting out in this hobby, this is ideal. You can get this and a couple of HD 598s and set up a decent entry level to see if you like this hobby for less than $200. Not bad, not bad at all.
