There are too many size confusions with this article. Hope that helps! I bought my 40 lb AmStaff/Heeler mix based on other reviews which is way too big. Here's the problem - the dimensions given by the manufacturer do not include the additional length of the strap! The label provided indicates the length: Petite 7-9 inches, Small 9-11 inches, Medium 11-15 inches, Large 13-20 inches. All wrong! The medium-sized tension band adds another 3.5 inches when relaxed. My dog size is 13.5 inches just behind the ears where the martingale should sit, but even at the smallest size the collar adjusts to 15.5 inches when there is no tension. This makes it big enough to slide off their head or down to the base of their neck where the tension correction will choke your dog. This also means that you have to constantly adjust the collar in the right position. Not sure! Martingales are designed for sitting. up and only use tension for quick correction or you could injure or kill your dog. The reviews that say these collars can kill are true, but that's because they were used irresponsibly; When used ONLY for running and other leash training exercises - and fitted correctly - they are very safe and effective. They should not be worn unattended! This gets a lower rating but the product is great if you get the right size. My dog has his regular dog tag collar and knows that collar is all he needs.
