They make the steps more stable and I think they relieve the retraction mechanism. I chose two and placed them outside folding inwards. Makes it reliable on rough terrain. I can't give this product 5 stars because the quality of the long screw just isn't there. Both of mine were slightly bent, causing them to get stuck in the tube on the last two inches of inward travel. The binding was enough to fully retract the wrench. Instead of sending them back I made a template and straightened them in an arbor press. They are now freely rotating, fully adjustable and easy to retract by hand. Since they are located under the steps, regular cleaning and dry lubrication are required. However, if they increase confidence during use and help extend the life of your $110 stepper motor, it's worth it.
