I work with metal. I bought a 4 inch divider because it has a shorter leg size which allows me to get smaller diameters more accurately. The 4" splitter works better than my 6" or 8" splitter and has some thick metal slag on the carbon steel. Thick mill scale requires more pressure to draw a deep line in it. Common delimiters seem to do a decent job. I intend to abuse this tool to the point where I'll eventually have to sharpen the cue points, but they're holding up for now. BTW they work great with stainless steel (no scale and easy to mark diameters).
