Review on Hydro II Sponge Pro Filter by Amanda Engelhardt

A cheap and effective addition to any filtration system

These filters are ideal as inlet filters for aquarium pumps and other filters. Not only do they offer additional biological filtration area, but they also feature a super-mechanical pre-filter that prevents algae and debris from clogging the biomedia in sump and canister filters. They also ensure that smaller fish are not injured or killed by the powerful pump. They significantly extend the impeller life of "suspended" power filters and prevent dirt from being sucked in and damaging the impellers. I use the larger 125 gallon version for my 55 gallon fresh water tank. Although it may appear large and ugly, it is barely noticeable against the black background of my aquarium. Like many people I tend to overfill my tank so that it adds extra biofilter capacity to the canister filters I have under the tank and also the main purpose I have is to protect small fish from pump suction and too prevent canisters from biologically clogging with algae and garbage. It distributes the absorption power so well that between feedings even my smallest tetras and barbel can swim around looking for filtered out, overlooked flakes. of water. For a beginner looking for cheap and easy filtering, I think a powerful head is better than most other filtering solutions. This is much easier and better than a gravel filter system. No filtration system could be easier for the beginner or the person on a budget to install or maintain. When I do weekly water changes, I just turn off the pump, remove this filter from the inlet and give it a good rinse in the bucket of pumped water. Then I just swap out the foam filter, fill the tank with water and turn the pump back on. Even with my setup of two canister filters under the tank, my weekly maintenance remains just as easy. The Hydro Sponge filters everything out so well that I don't have to worry about cleaning the bio-media in the containers. Before I got the Hydro-Sponge I used the AquaClear Quick Filter Powerhead with removable media that did the same job. The AquaClear rapid filter is not very good at filtering out very fine particles. The water in my aquarium has always had a slight green tinge due to small algae particles floating in the water. After switching to Hydro-Sponge, the water in the tank remains as crystal clear as fresh tap water.
