bought this radio because it seemed perfect for my JL - I could install it out of sight in a limited car space and it had all the features I wanted. When I first set it up with the mic extender attached, I got no transmit power and nothing but a beep from the handwheel. With it off the hook and the mic plugged directly into the device, I had full transmit power punctuated by intermittently varying squeak frequencies (depending on how tight the mic cable was). I was sure I had a well matched antenna but it was old so I bought a new one and that was the only difference in the world. With the new antenna I get excellent reception and full transmission power without feedback. I'm glad I didn't give up on this little radio as it's built into the jeep very neatly.
