Minimum clearance 4 1/2 inches in first position. It opens up to 6 inches. 4 1/2 inches is way longer than I need. Apparently they don't include the cross-section of the bar in the measurement, only the straight part. However, I bought the mount from Home Depot and it is much smaller than this one. I've included a picture of the two so you can see the difference, although there's a Home Depot still in the box. They are heavy so I'm confused by reviews saying they flex and/or are light because mine definitely don't.
