Appearance, tactile sensations, price are right, but the most terrible smell

This rug is a real treasure for its looks and softness. I can't yet appreciate how easy it is to keep clean because I just started using it yesterday August 11th. That is the downside of this rug because I received the rug on July 31st. chemical smell and toxins to the point where I could use the rug. Why did I keep it? Because of the looks - just like the picture posted and the soft texture - it stands next to my bed for my bare feet to feel it every night - at a great price! For that reason, I gave it two weeks to fill it up enough to use next to my bed. I have asthma and it's very important not to inhale toxic fumes all night while I sleep - it could kill me or at least put me in the hospital (and they're almost overcrowded in Florida right now). I also have a companion parakeet who is also deadly from toxic chemical fumes. Here's what it took to get the mat to the point where I could use it and not smell it (based on the best approach I've found from web searching): - Scrub with a soft brush and mild dish soap - on both sides, especially the bottom because that is the biggest source of smoke. - Hang to dry and ventilate outside - at least outside the house so you don't have to deal with noxious fumes anywhere in the house like in the garage or in my case on the glass-enclosed porch. I let it air out for 2-3 days on each side and it still smells like chemicals! - Lay it flat and completely coat one side with baking soda, rubbing the powder into the material so that it becomes saturated with the dry powder as much as possible. Leave on for 2-3 days, vacuum off the baking soda thoroughly, flip and repeat on the opposite side. Of course, make sure it's not exposed to the elements, excessive dust and dirt, and place a cloth or plastic underneath to keep the other side clean. Pat the carpet on both sides to remove baking soda residue. did not take. Don't hit too hard or you will break the fibers. But it's polypropylene, so not too brittle. There was a small cloud of dust when I did this, so it was a necessary step. It is very important to remove all of the baking soda as it has absorbed all of the chemicals. I didn't get it when I first smelled the carpet with the powder - I thought the process didn't work. But after you removed all of the baking soda the odor was gone and it went into a vacuum cleaner bin where it could just be thrown straight into the trash outside so there is no odor in the house. The whole process took 11 hours. days from receipt of the carpet. So you're paying that extra "price" for the carpet - it's up to you to decide if it's worth it or not. it was for me
