I was a bit skeptical because the price was so low but the reviews were so good that I decided to give it a try. If it hadn't worked, it would have been an acceptable loss. I'm happy to say that this is by far the best investment I've made in a long time. I rent a house with old pipes that give me trouble about every six months. I got tired of calling the landlord or roto-router and incurring charges for what was always a ridiculously small pile of everything, and everything else was slowly draining away. I am incredibly happy with this product! A few things to note: * I've noticed that some of the negative reviews give the impression that simply twisting the handle will insert and retract the snake - this is not the case. This is an affordable MANUAL drill bit that's a bit simpler thanks to the rotating/static drum. You still have to show some elbow grease and that's all there is to it. I would say a small price to save even more money. *You must insert and lengthen the coil manually. When the snake encounters a blockage, spin the spool clockwise and attempt to pierce through and hook into the blockage. Pulling back and turning counterclockwise helps clear blockages. drum HOLDS snake coil; the turning handle TURNS the COIL in the tube and helps to unclog the blockage; Thumbscrew makes the reel steerable and stable; * The reel head "fits" not only in narrow hole stocks - it's slightly larger to hook more material. In this case, simply place the tip of the coil in the drain and then turn the knob clockwise. The spool/bobbin threads into the drain through a large head, which can then be inserted into the drain if required.* When removing the spool from the drain, alternate between two methods: - reinsert it into the round receiving compartment - rotate the Counterclockwise handle* If the spool appears to catch during removal, continue with the above methods. It clears the clog.* If you don't see the clog right away, submerge the drain for a moment and then use the snake again. You should start to see some progress. * You may have to do this multiple times for permanent blocking. * You can remove the entire snake from the tray (by loosening the thumbscrew); Put it in the sink with some dish soap, rinse, towel dry and use some oil (I used hair cutting oil) to oil it again. Wipe and dry the tray as well. Wipe off excess oil with a paper towel and return to tray. I just slide the coil back in, bend it so it's circular again, then slide the snake through until you get to the end.
