Review on πŸ”§ Powerbuilt 640811 Back Tap Thread Repair: Restoring Threads with Ease by Kyle Rodman

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Saved me $$$! the best of the metric sockets and sets

This tool was worth the money I paid for it. It helped me get out of a jam when the spark plug threads in the head of our 2009 Grand Caravan failed and I couldn't put the spark plug back in. I loosened the tool, lubricated its threads with grease, pushed it all the way into the cylinder head, lifted the tool's shank and slowly pulled it out, changing direction a turn or so as it started to stick. I was patient and it paid off! I was able to cut and clean the threads to put the plug back into the cylinder head. The only thing I can say "against" is that although some people in their reviews said to increase the diameter of the tool slightly with each pass, I found this impossible. Whenever I've tried this, the conical part of the tool that distributes the knurled threads just rotated and didn't lengthen to increase the diameter of the thread. The only way I could get it to catch and stretch was to hold the tapered piece with my fingers. Well, you can't do that while that part of the tool is in the cylinder, and in order for the tool to be fully inserted into the cylinder head, you must completely loosen the tool. The only way to get it to work was to insert the tool into the cylinder head while it was loose and then, once inserted, "push" the cone up so the tool was at its maximum diameter.

Pros
  • handy item
Cons
  • very expensive
