Review on DORMAN 31002 HELP! Power Steering Coupling Disc: Reliable Steering Support for Optimum Performance by Carlos Barrett

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Fits my 1986 Ford F-150 5.0 4x4 XLT Lariat

So this is an initial review for those who have an old truck like mine. I was struggling to find a reasonably priced option to fix my Ford steering problem. It has a one-piece rivet assembly for the steering shaft lower joint. With some work and modification I was able to get this working like a charm. I had to cut and drill rivets. I disassembled the shaft and was able to use it to reassemble and replace the lobe joint. Went like clockwork. You have to buy different screws. I chose 5/16" x 2" to make sure I had enough length. I've also used lock washers as a temporary fix until I can get to a hardware store that doesn't have nylon lock nuts. The holes line up perfectly and everything else fits just right. It was a bit of work without a drill, but I managed it with a Dremel tool and a hand drill with a metal attachment. I will update this review to update how well it has held up. I just didn't want to spend $200 on a truck that I paid $500 for to get a remanufactured steering shaft. I'm glad I have a $10 repair on a discontinued part.
