Unconventional use worked
I have a smaller fire safe that I wanted to turn into a box for some payments while I was away. This meant installing it in a lid, which required cutting a slot not unlike the slot in a mailbox door. It certainly fixed the original result, which was a little rough given the things it's been through. So far I am satisfied with the result. I say this far because I also ordered Brass Accents A07-M0060 Mail Jack, 3" x 10", Stainless Steel which I can consider. I'll probably install it later. Once the initial installation confirms the concept, the rest follows.
