YES! They are suitable for 5 gallons. Buckets from Home Depot, Lowes, Ace Hardware etc. Large. There is a gap at the bottom that allows water to circulate. When you push the insert down, the gap is only about 1/2 inch in the center and about 2-1/4 inches on the sides. I bought 3 of these to give away for Christmas and I will probably buy a few more. I haven't used one to wash my car yet, but I'm sure it will serve you very well. I got my brother one for Christmas - hand washing his trucks is like going to church for him - and he loves it, as he tells me to everyone he knows who is serious about hand washing 1. I actually plan on using a couple of these for an alternative purpose aside from washing cars - I'll be using 2 or 3 of these along with some 5 gallon buckets. to make a compost bin for red worms!
