This is an amazing wave generator! It creates a strong current in the tank. I installed it slightly above the water simply because it was pretty strong and the tetras didn't swim well. If you balance it on the water surface, that's fine. I use a 20 gallon tank and it circulates the water very well. The magnetic grip is very strong and I can adjust it from the outside. It can be a bit noisy when pouring water from above, but it sounds like a fountain. (Plus, it was designed to be completely submerged). This helps keep the water clean. After a while my fish really enjoy playing in the bubbles - it took me a bit of fiddling to find a good spot that doesn't create too much current but once you do it is perfect. I found a guy on YouTube who recommended this and a cotton pad to keep aquariums clean.
