Review on ๐Ÿ“€ Panasonic DMP-BDT220: The Ultimate Wi-Fi 3D Blu-ray DVD Player with Integrated Functionality by Antonio Bacon

Revainrating 2 out of 5

Almost excellent.

[See update below.] I've had this player for a few weeks now and everything seems to be working as advertised - very well. I haven't tried the 3D feature as I don't have a TV. I had one pleasant and one less pleasant surprise: very good: I discovered that Netflix movies can be streamed with Panasonic with subtitles. That's a big plus for me as I don't hear as well as I used to. I have three other Blu-ray players and none of them can do this. I always assumed Netflix was to blame. I wonder if other new players can do this - it's never mentioned in the reviews I've seen. [To update: I had a chance to test the Sony S590 (Panasonic's competitor) and found that it can also display Netflix subtitles. Maybe it's a standard feature on newer players.] Cons: To my surprise, the remote control cannot be programmed to make the volume control work with non-Panasonic TVs. It's ok, but I first encountered it with a peripheral console. So, to watch just one movie, you need to have two remote controls handy. I would have deducted half a star, but I couldn't. Another small issue is that the player is very short, front to back, and very light. Thus, stacking components is difficult unless this block is on top. And lightness means that it slides at the slightest touch; I guess I'll have to look for some sticky feet. Basically I am very satisfied: Pretty manufacturer at an incredibly low price. If there are problems over time I will update. UPDATE: I've had this unit for a few months now and it's having a few glitches that are causing me to deduct a few stars. With more than a few Blu-ray discs, the machine will eventually freeze in the middle of a movie and refuse to continue. As I primarily play Netflix discs, the problem might be the lack of pristine finishes, but I don't usually see any flaws and cleaning doesn't seem to help. Also when I tried them on my Sony S90 they played great. I've been having streaming issues lately too. It looks like the device can't find a signal, and when it then connects, the operation slows down to a bare minimum. Factory reset, power cycle, etc. are random decisions. I'm giving two stars because the device isn't completely useless; just frustrating. So far, it still plays regular DVDs well, and the streaming features work about two-thirds of the time. In short, I am far less satisfied with Panasonic than when I started. It's even worse because the Sony S90 (bought about a month later and used for much longer) continues to work just as well. If you're determined to buy this player, purchase Revain's two-year warranty for an additional $20. The manufacturer's warranty after 90 days is practically worthless.
