If there's one thing I've done 100% right in raising my children, it's been providing clean, filtered water. I'm shocked how many people mistake water for anything else when it really is the only thing that needs to be considered for children and their survival. Honestly, if you don't filter the water before you drink it, then you are the filter. The two most important local problems are lead and 1,1,2-trichloroethane. Lead is obvious, but 1,1,2-trichloroethane is a common solvent that used to be simply dumped on the ground or in drying wells at dry cleaners and auto repair shops. Due to some startling omissions, tons of 1,1,2-trichloroethane ended up in the tailings pile, which has since leaked into the aquifer. Local testing is conducted over time and wells are simply cycled on and off based on testing as the underground plume moves. The only way to tell is if the sample from the well comes back positive, but it's the same well that people drink from. For example, a particular well can be contaminated for up to a month before anyone notices. You need a filter between the water source and the faucet. I have used many filters from MSR to Culligan, Brita and Epic. And there is no doubt that Epic is the best and most efficient water filter. Listen, you have the opportunity to drink the most important liquid you will drink of your entire life. If you really care about water, you have to keep going with the best, and that's EPIC. Don't spoil it. For real.
