Review on πŸ’‘ Extech DM220 CAT IV Pocket Multimeter with Non-Contact Voltage Detection by Eric Smithlin

Revainrating 3 out of 5

It's good enough, but I wanted it to be a lot more.

All meter functions work as expected with acceptable accuracy. There is no switch to turn off the device completely - when the switch is in the 'off' position the non-contact voltage detector continues to work, so if you hit the device or walk past voltage sources it will light up. I don't know how this affects battery life, but I generally don't like battery powered devices that can't be completely turned off as they sit in the drawer for too long between uses and you end up with a dead device and draining batteries . The probes are nice to the touch, but are an integral part of the device, so replacing a damaged probe is a separate project. It uses AAA batteries, not AA or 9V, which is inconvenient for my use (I wanted to make this part of my "kit" which now includes all AA batteries). Overall I like it but I really want to like it more and it just doesn't get me there. At over $40, it's not different enough from a $5 job at a home center/cheap tool store for me to feel like I made the right choice.
