The small utility knife works well but the wires tend to fray.

The small meter works well, but the leads tend to fray on the bottom of the meter when carried in a pocket. Use this meter at work, carry it in your pocket every day, it's small and handy. has to manually switch between DC and AC readings and run in DC mode, but I can live with that.

Pros
  • Consistent test results
Cons
  • Big and chunky

non-contact voltage detection is sufficient for my requirements

A bit clumsy for pocket size. Flashlight, it would be better if it stays on after you press the switch. no storage of test lead lengths (only test leads). no auto range. non-contact voltage detection is sufficient for my needs. This is an acceptable unit.

Pros
  • Absolute legend
Cons
  • Clarity

Best Chinese Electronics

Extech is the same as Pyle PDMT05. Well, some Chinese company sells them in bulk and changes the sticker on the front if they wish. There's nothing wrong. Just remember that rebranding hardware like this means there's really no ownership of the product. you can tell. I would give this unit 4 stars if the following were true: 1) (This is the most important thing to me!) If the signal processing stabilized quickly. You should get fast, semi-accurate results. Not so with this one. The signals are…

Pros
  • Great Price
Cons
  • Almost Never

It's good enough, but I wanted it to be a lot more.

All meter functions work as expected with acceptable accuracy. There is no switch to turn off the device completely - when the switch is in the 'off' position the non-contact voltage detector continues to work, so if you hit the device or walk past voltage sources it will light up. I don't know how this affects battery life, but I generally don't like battery powered devices that can't be completely turned off as they sit in the drawer for too long between uses and you end up with a dead device

Pros
  • Easy to read control panel
Cons
  • Some cons
