With all the one star ratings, maybe the quality control isn't very good. Or maybe dissatisfied customers don't know how to switch on the solar box so that it can be charged throughout the day (the instructions clearly explain how to do this). It will not charge unless you click on it. After charging, it turns on automatically at dusk. They work well in Southern California. We woven 2 strands into the top of the hot tub pergola and they are perfect. I installed sun boxes on top of the pergola so they couldn't be seen. warm white light There are many additional flicker patterns but I never use them so I always leave the light on and it works late into the night, every night, even after a cloudy day. One device turns on a few minutes earlier than the other, but that's not a problem. I would recommend wiping down the solar part of the charger from time to time as dirt builds up over time.
