Here's an example of why everyone should have one of these diagnostic tools. I was on vacation visiting relatives whose house was about an hour away from my house. When I was almost there, the check engine light came on and didn't go off until the end of the ride. One of the family members often repairs cars himself, and I asked him what he thought was the reason for the warning. He said he has an OBD scan code reader and can probably determine what caused the warning. He was only gone a few minutes and when he came back he showed me a report on his smartphone that said "Emissions system leak detected" along with a code. Examination of the code revealed that the gas cap was most likely the cause, which was most likely due to the cap not being securely attached. A look at the lid confirmed this and on the way back the warning light went out. What a relief to be able to drive home knowing the engine is fine. Needless to say I asked the name of the OBD device he was using so I could keep it in my car. He recommended this one, and I recommend it to anyone who wants to take the guesswork out of the check engine light.
