Review on High-powered Goldenrod Electric Trailer Winch: 3000LBS Max Load Capacity by Matthew Sutton

Revainrating 4 out of 5

TERRIBLE INSTALLATION! But it works as it should.

I have not used a winch to raise my 22 foot. Aquasport Explorer on the ramp. This rating refers to the installation. Two days later I'm still working on it. Some aspects were VERY disappointing. I first wired this winch from a 2000 Ford F250 power stroke starter battery to a diesel cab and a 7ft cab. bed by routing the positive cable at the rear as close under the truck as possible. The job is not pleasant, but everything seems to have gone well. But when I drove to the Zieman trailer, the 8 inch wire was NOT ENOUGH to get to the winch. I have a real problem with this! This winch is made in the USA which I like, but we drive big trucks here to haul heavy boats so we need a winch. Isn't it asking too much to ask Dutton-Lainson to provide long enough cabling for most applications instead of skimping on a few yards of #8 wire? The installation video shows an alternative installation using a 2-pin connector mounted on the bumper. Said we can get this at an auto parts store. Seems like a good way to go as I still have to splice a cable that's too short, but here's the catch: the connector type they show in the video that's rated for 80 amps isn't available. I visited three auto parts stores, a truck and home store, and a farm and tractor supply store. No, nobody has ever seen that. Another surprise: they warn you not to run this winch continuously for 4 minutes or more as it will damage the motor. WHAT? A winch that can't run 4 minutes at a time? What if you want to change the bracelet? Need to either hand wind a new belt or run the winch intermittently? He seems rather weak to me. One final note: the crank they use in the event of a winch failure is small and has an annoying "safety feature": a spring-loaded flange that hits a big gray lever on the side with every turn. This is believed to act as a ratchet to prevent uncontrolled free rotation of the crank arm if the boat is launched too quickly or backed up on a trailer during manual recovery. This flange makes manual rotation VERY awkward. Anyway I will update this review if I ever get in the water. At the same time, note that depending on the truck, this installation may not go as smoothly or as quickly as you would like. in the morning and went down to the lake to try. The ascent was easy: the winch worked as it should. I particularly like the ease of pulling the strap out in freewheel mode and the obvious benefit of not having to manually flip the boat, especially on the last foot or so. Based on my only ramping experience, I'll be increasing my rating from 2 to 4 stars, with the limitations listed above preventing it from earning a solid 5 stars.
