Review on Efficient and Stylish: BLACK+DECKER 1.7L Cordless Silver Kettle, KE2000SD by Rosemary Wright

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Automatic shut-off failed less than a year after purchase

Many people will like this product: durable and attractive stainless steel housing, plastic window to determine the water level, indicator inside the switch that says the kettle is on . I lowered the rating of the product for two reasons that may not matter to you. Most importantly, it is sold with an auto-off function, but this function stopped working stably after 7-8 months and then stopped working at all. I've been using electric kettles since the early 1980's when this feature was optional, so I'm used to staying by my kettle and keeping an eye on it. Turns out my whole family are pretty anxious and distracted people so they keep boiling the kettle dry and bothering me with a fire or something so I'm buying a spare now. It seems that once people get used to a working auto shut-off, they stick with the habit of leaving the kettle. So I have to admit it's a safety hazard and was a deal breaker for me, although this kettle probably has years to live in terms of water heating. Another reason I downgrade a product is because it's less important. All kettles I've used - not just electric but also stovetop - have "floats" or limescale that eventually flakes off and appears in the water. Old kettles on the hearth could not always be brought inside to be cleaned. This kettle is a little deep, but I get the scale off pretty easily. The little "filter" that was supposed to weigh down the "floaters" and keep them away from your precious cup of tea or french press lost its ability to be a filter after a few months when the strands bunched up and created huge holes in the gravel left could go through. . Luckily, it slides in and out easily so I can just throw the damn thing away. I don't worry about limescale getting into my cup any more than I have before in my life - never tasted anything bad, never seen anything disgusting in my cup, never had a major problem. If that bothers you, stop heating the water and drink it all cold, you'll be fine.
