Great security system!

We live autonomously on 40 acres. We have a 1,000 foot driveway and live in a desert area of Arizona. I bought this system to warn us when vans (or neighbors or intruders) arrive. This is important because our house is so well insulated that I rarely hear the engine noise from outside until someone comes to our front door! So far it has met all my expectations! It works great and now I know when someone comes through our outer gate! This is very convenient as we run a home business and often do home deliveries. I love knowing that someone has come. My wife and I find it very relaxing to know that we don't have to look outside when we think we hear an engine noise. If the alarm doesn't sound, NOBODY IS HERE BUT US! So far it has worked exactly as advertised with 100% success rate with no false positives or detection errors! It was very easy to set up. After unboxing the system and reading the manuals, I set the sensitivity as the manual says (the dial should be at 12 o'clock according to the manual). I then dug a hole parallel to the driveway, right on the edge where the tire tracks are (I have a 16ft wide driveway and I wanted to make sure cars were coming and going so I decided to place the sensor partially in the driveway buried). I placed the sensor in 2 1/2 inch SG 80 PVC pipe (although 2 inch would do for SG 40) and then taped the ends of the pipe to add some waterproofing. I then buried the pipe in a hole in the driveway (again, parallel to the street). I run the wire from the sensor to the nearest tree in a shallow trench as it won't bother anyone and we live in a dry climate. The wire says it's a straight recessed type for use in sprinkler systems. Then I hung the transmitter on the opposite side of the tree, out of sight of the driveway, at 5 feet, attached and extended the antenna. I went inside, plugged in the receiver and voila! I called my wife who was at the house and then drove past the now buried sensor on my truck. Every time I drove past, I would hear the announcement "Alert Zone 1” on the phone. It works great! The voice alarm isn't very loud even at maximum volume. So if you have a big house, you might not hear the alarm. This is normal as you can connect an external buzzer or horn to the system if required. We love that the alarm isn't obnoxious and is a speaking voice, and we can hear it perfectly from anywhere in our 1,500 square foot home. We have chosen to keep our security system a secret from everyone as there is no point in installing it and then letting everyone know we have it and telling them where the transmitters are etc. Security systems work best , if others don't know where or how they are used, duh! I highly recommend the product! Definitely 5 stars! In a year I will review the product again and see how it holds up! Update June 19th: Still working great and still on my first set of batteries! I've had a few false thunder/lightning alerts and once or twice got a weak signal from someone's walkie talkie but other than that it worked perfectly! I still love this device! Update November 9th: Still running great and still on the first set of batteries! Update 01/18/2013: Still runs great and still on the first set of batteries! Wow, even though we froze many days and the nights were measured in the single digits! We love our system! No false alarms! When the alarm goes off, I KNOW someone has arrived. Update April 23, 2013: After 1 year still on the first set of batteries and still great every time! Update June 22nd: Okay, so today we finally replaced the first set of batteries. The normally gruff "Alert Zone One" was dull and slow, like a record playing slow! Therefore, knowing when it's time to change batteries seems easy: just pay attention to the warning message, which will slow down. Impressive battery life. I installed new Energizer batteries as they lasted over 1 year in this unit!

Pros
  • Enables two-way conversation. The base station M538-BS works as a transceiver. It can receive alarms from any MAPS station and send a message to another MURS radio station
Cons
  • New competitors have appeared
