Description of πŸ”” Wireless Driveway Alarm System - Dakota Alert MURS MAPS-BS-KIT: Metal Detecting Transmitter with 50-FT Of Direct Burial Cable and M538-BS MURS Base Station

Helps monitor your driveway - This Dakota Alert MAPS BS Kit provides real-time monitoring of a driveway thanks to the wireless long-range M538-BS Base Station and MURS Alert Probe Sensor (MAPS). Auto-detects moving vehicles - Once you bury the MAPS probe in your driveway, it will automatically detect any cars that drive 14-feet near or over the probe. Never sends false alarm - The probe is only capable of detecting large metallic vehicles. It doesn't detect moving animals or strong winds. Provides 2-way conversation - The M538-BS Base Station operates as a transceiver. It can receive alarm signals from any MAPS Transmitter and transmit the message to another MURS radio. Doesn't require FCC license - FCC The MURS Base Station employs Multi-Use Radio Service, so it doesn't need an FCC license even if it operates in Very High Frequencies (151.820~154.600 MHz).

I really wanted it to work.

So I bought four (yes, four!) Dakota probes + transceiver and tried to get one to work. I really wanted it to work. 1. (Dakota Alert DCPA-4K): worked for about an hour (while we tested it) and then stopped. 2. (Dakota Alert DCPA-4000): Actually worked fine but had very short range (doesn't even work within 200 yards of house, there are trees but house is still visible). rather than the 1 mile range of the previous two models I tried. Worked for two days before the batteries died. Unfortunately,

Pros
  • Enables two-way conversation. The base station M538-BS works as a transceiver. It can receive alarms from any MAPS transmitter and relay the message to another MURS radio.
Cons
  • Some bugs

Fairly good with some modifications

First of all, I'm happy with the device. Works without false alarms. I use it at about 500ft and it works every time. I had a few issues for other people to look at. This device uses 6 AA batteries in a cheap little holder. After just a few months, the internal connections on the battery holder began to rust and the unit stopped working unless I cleaned the connections almost daily. To solve this problem I assembled a 9 volt battery from 6 C cells soldered together with wires between the cells.

Pros
  • Never sends false alarms - the probe can only detect large metal vehicles. It doesn't detect moving animals or strong winds
Cons
  • No instructions

Great security system!

We live autonomously on 40 acres. We have a 1,000 foot driveway and live in a desert area of Arizona. I bought this system to warn us when vans (or neighbors or intruders) arrive. This is important because our house is so well insulated that I rarely hear the engine noise from outside until someone comes to our front door! So far it has met all my expectations! It works great and now I know when someone comes through our outer gate! This is very convenient as we run a home business and often do
