Review on πŸ“· Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 40-150mm F4.0-5.6 R Zoom Lens for Micro Four Thirds Cameras - Black: Review & Comparison by Daniel Robinson

Revainrating 5 out of 5

This is a five star item even though it is a cheap plastic case

Ok how do I put it? This lens gets five stars, but only if it retails for $99. It's all plastic, doesn't have a very smooth zoom, and one I tested had a little rattling. The lens also doesn't have the special optical coating of its more expensive cousins, one of which costs over four times as much (see ) and the other, an Olympus Zuiko edition (which costs over ten times as much: see The PRO Olympus M.ZUIKO 40 -150mm f/2.8 interchangeable lens for Olympus/Panasonic Micro 4/3 cameras) and has a simpler lens element design than either of these more expensive lenses. But if you can handle it all, it's an amazingly sharp lens and can actually take some very good photos. Plus, it's so light you'll hardly notice it on camera. This is a really great offer, especially in the sale. This produces a fairly sharp image at almost all lengths, and colors are punchy but visually neutral. In a way, this is the perfect travel lens thanks to its long zoom and very light weight. But you have to admit that this lens just doesn't feel like one of Olympus' "professional" lenses due to its plastic construction. But I must say that I was really surprised by the quality of the images, which are certainly not the best in their class, but in fact they are not bad, very clear and respond well to post-processing. If you add the very light weight and very cheap price, it's really a good choice. So it's all about understanding what you're getting. If you want a premium lens, go for the Pro Olympus 12-100mm lens, which has a completely different feel and much more polished optics and will cost around $1,300. But if you're looking for a cheap, lightweight lens that's good for short trips, spontaneous shooting, etc., that's sharp and produces photos around 70-80% below the level of the most expensive lenses, then this is for you. It's without a doubt an excellent manufacturer, punching well above its weight (no pun intended). And if you feel like the zoom mechanism isn't working smoothly, just remember that you can get great shots for next to nothing. Five stars.
