I have a Qnap TS-451A NAS that I bought many years ago. I spent months setting up RAID 5 of 4 drives. Changed discs several times, always the ones listed as compatible. During those months I had to replace drives 3 and 4 no matter what drive I put in there, forcing me to rebuild the RAID. I gave up and have been using it with a drive ever since. I love the applications you can run, especially for me as an IoT developer. I recently bought an Asustor AS6604T NAS. Upgrade it to 12GB RAM, put 4 HDDs on it, turn it on and it will create RAID 5 automatically. It just worked. I'm in the process of migrating my Docker container to Asustor. It's a lot faster than Qnap, partly because it has the latest hardware. Structurally it is well built. I love it!
