If you want to test them out before installing, just plug a piece of housing into the small end as shown, no cable needed, just housing. Unlike some other regulators, they require a case and will not work without a case installed at that end. This is good as it allows you to adjust with one hand while riding, as some other (cheap) adjusters require 2 hands which is inconvenient. This night will be obvious to some but I'm sure people returned them thinking they wouldn't work. A test before installation is always good, and you can also take them apart and put a drop of oil on the threads before installing. I haven't even installed them yet and can say they are good controls that will work well. I'll update my review later when I have time to use it.
