This is my second set after the bike with the first set was stolen. The first kit I had was battery powered and when I saw the rechargeable option I was broke because I ride more at night now. Not sure if it was strictly necessary as I never had to change batteries on my last set. I really like this brand, I've been using token lanterns for many years and the batteries last all winter. My only complaint is that the rechargeable version is slightly larger than the original and the button is harder to press. So if you have weak fingers, it might be worth buying the original.
