These artificial pencils are supplied pre-sharpened and ready to use. Pencil leads are soft yet strong enough to create bold, continuous lines or solids, or subtle shadows of light. I've found that I can "mix" more than one color. The metal case, while a little tight when opened, makes it easier to access the pins, which can be easily "pulled out" by pressing on the pointed ends. Once "snapped" the pencil case stays closed and can be placed vertically on a shelf for easy access if desired. This metal sleeve should be easy to carry in your carry-on, but you can slip an elastic strap over it for extra support. I didn't try using pencils with water because I found the colors were quite saturated without wetting the leads. The set contains a large selection of 24 colors.
