Review on Stanley 16 789 Sweetheart Socket Chisel: An Exceptional Woodworking Essential by Ian Bates

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Very sharp out of the box and after some work with the chisel a great tool.

I have five other Sweetheart chisels, four from the 4 piece set and a 1/16". The Sweetheart 750 is not as perfect as other top chisels and has some machining marks that you may come across with your fingernail. Most require some dressing as well. 1 1/4" was no exception and required more work to smooth than any others I own as they had a large concave area that extended to the parallel edges of the chisel. Remember remove the paint first before you start grinding the chisel and the work will go faster. Given the Stanley price, it's worth buying these chisels and making the extra effort. Balance and feel in hand is a delight. All mine have a hardness not too difficult to sharpen and hone while retaining the edge for a long time. Frequent sharpening with a leather strap will keep them sharp and reduce the need for actual sharpening.
