I have an old Champion 101 strut and what usually breaks on it after about a hundred years is the thrust bearing between the trapezoidal screw and the spindle. Pretty hard to fix or replace unless you can find a $3 thrust bearing that's just the right width. Even if it wears out after a few years, it costs less than a drill.
