Debian Linux gotchas

Excellent device. However, I had a few problems with it. #1) The Revain page says it is a female DB9, which is not the case. It fits the male connector on windows boxes. But everything was fine. I thought I need a woman so I got what I really need. #2) I work with two computers, a Dell 5414 laptop (Debian Buster) and a Raspberry Pi 3+ (Raspian Stretch). I'm trying to host a Pi as a server on the internet. That's why I needed this adapter - I need to communicate with Juniper and Cisco routers and whatnot, and the Pi doesn't have an (easily accessible) port 232. Linux dox Plogable basically says "plug it in". This works on the Pi which only creates /dev/ttyUSB0 but not on the laptop which creates from ttyUSB0 to 3. And that makes ttyUSB3 an active connection. The way to deal with this, which I found after playing around with USB0 for hours and talking to Pluggable support, is to plug it into an already booted computer, type "sudo dmesg" on the terminal and the last one read line. Linux notices the newly connected USB device and processes it. However, Plugable doesn't say anything about the possibility of more than one ttyUSB entry in /dev anywhere, and your computer might do something unexpected, as did mine. Plugable support is a pleasure, by the way. Very knowledgeable, responsive and helpful.

Pros
  • FLEXIBLE - Programmable baud rate from 75 to 128,000 bits per second. Plug and play creation of a COM port. power supply via USB; no external power required
Cons
  • Doubtful purchase for the elderly
