This monitor is a huge upgrade for me as it's from a 17" Dell model from almost a decade ago that still worked well despite its age - I just wanted something more. The. Well, that's definitely more! The picture quality on this monitor is fantastic and far better than my old TN monitor. A few notes on the unboxing and the original plugin: I found the default settings for brightness, contrast, and saturation to be too high. I also had a bit of trouble displaying the full resolution without flickering, but I found it was because I needed to update the driver for my graphics card. I also adjusted the focus setting so it looks right for my eyes (no doubt different than yours). Once these settings were made, everything was fine. I tried the eco mode setting - skip it; This caused the brightness and contrast to change at intervals depending on the amount of text visible in the table, and it was very distracting. Luckily it's pretty green with electricity. A few things to note from other reviews I've seen online - some people have complained about the 'film' on the screen and indeed while it's not quite matte it's not glossy either. The screen has a pearlescent finish, so there is an iridescence on white or light blue screens or areas of the screen that can be distracting for some on detail-oriented editing projects. On a completely black screen (the term is used loosely) there are really noticeable flares from all angles, especially on this particular screen in the bottom right corner. also, this highlight area has a slightly maroon hue when viewed slightly from the side. comes from an old TN monitor but still looks good and this shade is what I'm used to I think. Another big difference is the viewing angle - and many reviews seem to tout this as an extremely important aspect. Experience (maybe I'm old fashioned, but I'm usually sitting in front of my computer when I use it, so that's not the point for me). I viewed it from the side angles and while the colors remained true, the brightness faded a bit as the corners became more and more dull. To test out the different things I'll be using it for, I just toggled between theatrical and "beautiful" modes. In default mode, the large scaled-down small-print table was fresh as new linen. as well as a few detailed Google Sketchup designs that I pulled out as well as photos that I pulled out for my amateur but anal-preserving editing style. The mother-of-pearl finish was not a distraction from any of these projects, and to be honest I didn't even notice it unless I looked closely. In theater mode, the crash scene in Super8 streamed from Netflix was crisp, clear and enjoyable to watch. The slight bleed/maroon color issue was not distracting when viewing this scene set against a black background; Theater mode might have helped in this regard due to the naturally lower brightness levels. (By the way, it caught my eye in this scene and I adjusted the color saturation so that it didn't look like all the kids in this scene were wearing lipstick anymore.) Indeed, the light streaks I put on seen the black screen made no impression. the slightest difference in my enjoyment or in the functionality of the screen. I didn't notice and don't remember even looking for it - but if I forgot to look it wasn't a problem, was it? With all of this in mind, keep in mind that I came from an old 17" 4:3 TN monitor (which honestly needed cleaning too) - I didn't come from any 23" IPS monitor other than this one, and if you are, you should seriously consider seeing this in action or pairing it with something else if possible, especially if your job or obsessive hobby requires you to use this monitor for fine-tuning photos or whatever always use. The only connection I used was VGA. via the supplied cable. I didn't use an HDMI or DVI connection, so I can't comment on their functionality. do you have built in speakers? To be honest, I don't know; I think so, but they only work with an HDMI connection, which I haven't tested. and you should never read a review of built in monitor speakers as they will always be worse than a pair of discrete $10 speakers. The only other comment is that the OSD menu and buttons for navigating are not intuitive - up-down-left-right takes a bit of getting used to. They are also very inconvenient to use as they are attached along the bottom edge. It's not a big deal overall, but it's worth mentioning if you're a regular violinist. Overall I am very happy with it and can only recommend it. For the price (which Amazon dropped $5 immediately after purchase, morons!) you can't beat it.
