I have a somewhat dated Sony Vaio PCG-23 laptop running Windows XP SP3 and wanted to connect to the new Airport Extreme Wireless Router controlled by my Intel IMac desktop computer. The WLAN card installed in the Sony Vaio was either too outdated or no longer worked - no connection was established. I've checked for updated drivers and tried a few but couldn't find anything that uses WPA/WPA2 encoding and the current airport no longer recognizes the old WEP. So I needed a simple solution - a wireless PCMIA card adapter based on g or n technology and using WPA/WPA2. the other is to connect to the airport. Other reviews have shown this to be a good high speed adapter with the appropriate drivers and I wanted to get them from the Netgear support site. I simply opened the box, unfolded the PCIMA card, inserted it into the PCMIA slot and activated it. The light came on, but the driver found by Windows New Hardware didn't work. Wouldn't detect my WPA network. Oh oh! But thanks to other reviewers, I knew this could happen if I let Windows find the driver. There was no CD included, so I went to the Netgear support site at [.], downloaded and ran the WG511v2 version 3.2 software. Voila! He installed a different driver and the wireless card immediately found my WPA network and as soon as I entered my network's password it connected immediately. The moral of the story is: USE THE NETGEAR SOFTWARE, NOT THE WINDOWS DRIVER. I also went into device manager and disabled the old internal wireless adapter just to make sure there were no conflicts. How it works? FICTION! I'm getting 3.2 Mb/s from my 3.0 Mb/s DSL channel, I can't complain about that. Noticeably faster than a direct DSL cable connection, which brought me around 2.5 Mbit/s. If it's confusing, I'll say that a wireless card is faster than a DSL line connected directly to a computer. The controller software says if my connection was that fast it would give me 54Mbps. All bars are lit, so the signal strength is excellent. It works fast and cool, which I can't say for myself! And now I can run multiple computers on the same DSL line at the same time, so it's much better in that regard too. It was easy to install, works really well and once set up (which was easy) it's fully automatic. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
