I am writing this in relation to a transparent soil medium to observe root growth, so transparency may not be that important for decorations. They swell to about 16-18mm in diameter in about 5+ hours. I first noticed that they are not a ball like some of the other beads. However, when fully retracted, they tend to be spherical and somewhat oval, which is not a problem as you can see in the photos. Clarity is "modernized", what could explain the oval shape? Photographs were taken with distilled water. For comparison, a yellow was thrown, a container full of yellow balls looks like light yellow water. After complete absorption, the balls occupy 2/3 of the volume, 1/3 of the water. Despite other comments, they do NOT absorb food coloring. . Just soaking them in food coloring or water with food coloring will give them that color first until fully absorbed, which doesn't affect them.
