The Sangean HDT-1 and HDT-1X had a well designed front panel. Unfortunately, Sangean chose to cripple the HDT-20 with a horribly designed front panel that makes no sense from the most basic aspect of working as a component radio. random position in the upper right corner of the group of buttons in the middle of the panel and to the left of the tuning knob. The primary function of these numbered buttons should be to call up presets with a single button press, like other Sangean radios (of which I own several). However, if you want to pull up a menu to set the sleep timer, change alarm-1 or alarm-2, you can do it with a single tap. Why? Is it a component alarm clock first, then a component tuner? In fact, direct access to presets is only possible via the remote control. Unfortunately, the remote control has a limited range and the IR remote control sensor on the front has limited horizontal and vertical angles. In other words, the remote control is the easiest way to use the radio to call gifts, but it needs to be pointed directly at the sensor from a relatively short distance. This is disappointing for those who want to use this component tuner the way it was designed for listening to the radio! Only the adjustment knob remains. It's a nice addition to this radio and offers easy access to manual tuning, but it seems like the designers have concentrated everything on one knob with this redesign, completely forgetting that other tuning methods should be easy too. From the way the buttons work, you'd think the standard tune knob would cycle through the various alarm and timer functions rather than tuning the radio. Luckily, the button tunes the radio without pressing any other buttons. , but I can sum it up by saying that I think Sangean should just change the firmware and lettering on the front of this radio to allow the default numbered buttons to call up presets instead of settings menus. A long press on a number key saves a preset action, a short press saves a call action and changes the preset key to a menu key that provides access to other functions (e.g. sleep timer, display brightness, etc.). While you're at it, you need to separately place the power button on the left where it should be and it will be 5 stars. Call this version MK2 or HDT-21. In other words, they need to redesign this radio to work the same as other Sangean radios.
