Review on Kensington MicroSaver Retractable Laptop K64538US by David Dortch

Revainrating 2 out of 5

Great idea but poor rollability, cheap and bulky case = not worth the price

==Retractable Kensington Notebook Lock==BENEFITS: All laptops have locks available on Revain this is theoretically the best product. Packing away means you can easily carry the device around, which means you'll probably need to do it anyway if you lock your laptop up to start! CONS: I'm surprised by the great reviews for this device because the Kensington Lock seemed a lot cheaper than I expected for a number of reasons. Putting it away wasn't smooth; With my device, I had to manually "feed" the cable back into the device, even with the retract button pressed. When you're done, you should carefully guide the locking portion of the device back into the plastic guides that hold it in place. Overall, the whole device feels overly plasticky and even fragile, which is surprising for a Kensington device. As other reviewers have pointed out, the cord is quite short and can certainly be shortened, although I could accept that if other qualities were developed. The fact that this device relies on buttons is a real annoyance; who wants to carry a key with them? Combination locks are more portable and better suited for mobility-oriented devices. Opening the lock with a key is also not as easy as it might seem. The lock itself seems well made, but inserting the key and turning freely to unlock the computer is a bit more difficult when the laptop is locked on the table - this should be taken into account. After all, Kensington Castle is bigger than the photos would suggest. It's not as compact as I expected, and that's starting to outweigh its portability. CONCLUSION: This is a BIG idea that I hope other companies will pick up on. But this thing's larger size and cheap plastic feel, combined with a lock (annoying key) that's difficult to remove and put back, is starting to outweigh what Kensington would offer for convenience. I returned this lock in favor of a lock with a free combination cord.

Pros
  • Patented T-lock fits 99% of laptops
Cons
  • Not as thick as other lock picks
