So first of all, as others have said, BB8s are not 3D. You are 2D. One side is BB8 and the other side is plain white. The strand is a wire so you can make sure they are all pointing in the same direction. I wanted to use it as a night light so I hung it on my kid's bunk bed so my son could see the light downstairs and it wasn't in the way of my older son on the top bunk. As string lights they are pretty dim but bright enough to keep my youngest son happy. One thing I didn't know and it's hard to realize is that these lights have an automatic timer. When you turn it on, the light stays on for 6 hours and turns off for 18. (This morning when I saw the light was off I thought the batteries died overnight.) I like and dislike this feature. Luckily my son doesn't mind that the lights go out when he's sleeping.
