Review on Bilstein 24 146708 5100 Shock Absorber by Tim Nicholas

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Big shock, confusing instructions.

Excellent dampers. Replaced standard shock absorbers with a run of 100,000. Installation was pretty easy. Don't read the instructions completely. They are written by aliens. The aliens try to speak German. If you have basic mechanical skills, all you need is a page in the manual that shows you how to align the metal washers and rubber bushings depending on the type of shock absorber (typ.). The "type" should be visible on the shock absorber label itself. I think it was Type 4. I adjusted the wheels while touching the ground. I jacked up the axle on each side to give it some height and some relief on the shock, as well as give it a little more room so I wouldn't have to manually compress the new one as much. Just in case, place the jack under the axle. It might have been easier to remove the wheels, I just didn't want to. A ratchet wrench (forget the size) would be useful to remove the top stem nut. For me the new top nut was a different size, one more I think. A medium sized pry bar helped get the new damper in place below. For my setup I upgraded a "budget" 2.5" lift. There was a shock washer (to allow the use of a standard length shock) that was no longer needed as the 5100s have a longer reach that I removed. This is one but it would be nice to have a mate to help.I had to put on my own zip ties to hold the boot in place because the zip tie that came with the boot seemed short so I could tie it could grab and tighten. Good luck!
