Scanned several films, compared images to scans made from a printed photograph using a Canon flatbed scanner - Poor resolution when enlarged, looks pixelated. Look at two examples of a cat's eye - enlarged examples. Better scanned photo. - There is a yellow tint/noise that renders the images unusable (update: this may be an issue with the negatives, not the device). - Update 23 November 2020: Scanning a new roll of developed film just to ensure previous releases were not the result of poor quality old film. A new comparison (parent and child) has been added - on the left is a frame from Magnasonic, on the right is a frame from a 6 megapixel digital scan I received at a photo shop. I think it speaks for itself, the quality of the Magnasonic is far from acceptable. - Update June 12, 2021: The yellow cast may be due to blue channel degradation in poorly stored old films. If your photo editing software lets you change the balance of yellow and blue, it can help to some degree. Manual film extraction is time consuming because you have to scan each frame individually. Keep this in mind if you need to scan a lot of negatives. What is it for: - If you have old/newly developed film and want to look at the pictures and decide which ones to print (you can scan them later with a good flatbed scanner) - View old film, show pictures to kids for fun. What it's not good for: - Scanning film for archival purposes. Update: After much deliberation, I sent the device back, unfortunately the scan quality is below average and not suitable for my needs.
