The wire breaks / peels off

Used this to mount outdoor patio speakers throughout the yard (they all ran through a pipeline on the central California coast = mild weather year round). I never thought that in a few months the wire on the lid would just break by hand. Now, not only do I have to buy more cords, but I also have to spend hours re-installing white lights all over my yard.
