Review on πŸ§‚ Kamenstein 5.5-inch Chrome Salt and Pepper Shakers – Enhance Your Kitchen Style by Dragan Nelson

Revainrating 1 out of 5

Salt should be poured, not poured!

Despite my low rating, there are things I like about these shakers. The lightweight, clear acrylic construction is practical, tactile, modern and visually striking. The shiny silver-plated inserts are attractive and durable: I tried to significantly damage the plating surface with a metal object and failed. On the other hand, the price of $20 for a pair seemed high to me. The set is very problematic and forces me to give it 1 star. The box I received contained two shakers that, as far as I could tell, were exactly the same: neither was labeled "salt" or "pepper." The holes on both shakers were the same. I found the holes too big for the salt. I was quickly convinced of this when I put a few tablespoons of salt in one of the shakers. When I turned the shaker upside down, the salt just poured out of the holes! Shakers are meant to pour the salt, not pour it! When I tried a few tablespoons of pepper in another shaker, it really sloshed out. In other words, the holes are just the right size for the pepper, but TOO BIG for the salt! Of course, this is unacceptable unless you like to sprinkle a lot of salt in your food. I should mention that I used regular table salt from the grocery store food section for this test. Another issue with this product is the very odd care instructions, which advise the buyer to clean the blocks by wiping them with a damp cloth, but DO NOT immerse them in water! (See one of the photos accompanying this review.) But the only practical way to clean the inside of this shaker is to soak it in soapy water. A container that holds a food product (like salt or pepper) should be washed before first use as you don't know how much residue from the manufacturing or distribution process can coat the inside. However, care instructions say no to this simple, common-sense health and safety precaution. Despite this, I washed one of the blocks in soapy water, contrary to the care instructions, just to see what would happen. At first it seemed that it can be washed without any problems. I set the block aside to dry. The next day I inspected the block and found severe, ugly damage to some of the edges of the galvanic areas. Photo was posted with this review. So these devices really don't tolerate being immersed in soapy water, which is another reason for the bad rating.
