Works but bad bulbs

Bought two 80w bulbs for a farm. I hung them on shepherd hooks in the yard and hooked them up to timers that turn on at dusk and off at dawn. They do an excellent job of scaring away flies and other bugs that appear with livestock. However, there are a few bulbs in each block, and each of the included bulbs went out before the end of the season. To use these units this year I will be spending almost $40 to replace the lightbulbs. Given that 100% bounce rate, should I expect annual spending? The first bulb died before the end of summer (< 3 months) and the last bulb died before the first frost. This is an average life of 6 months at <30% duty cycle or approximately 1000 hours of life. This seems an unreasonably short lifetime for a UV lamp these days. Such gross waste stinks of deliberately self-destructive product design: Are lamps designed to fail in order to generate more revenue? Or is Flowtron simply unable to produce a quality product? Does it matter which hypothesis is correct? EDIT: I reluctantly ordered new bulbs and found that the starter bulbs were also blown. They can only be ordered from Flowtron and their shipping costs are astronomically exorbitant. What a bang.

Cons
