The 'bowl' area is serrated on the inside to hold the nut in place when cracking. Keep a close eye on those teeth because they will break and end up with your cracked nuts. I've been cracking a few nuts lately, including pecans, walnuts, and Brazil nuts. The nuts were relatively easy to separate from the shell. Some nuts are just hard to crack. My fear of this cracker came as I turned it over to empty the nuts and shells into my hand, but I also noticed little black things in my hand. The little black things are the teeth in this cracker! I cracked open the nuts and quickly sift the shells, then tossed the nuts into my mouth. No longer. When the tines fall off, I just pour the nuts into a colander and sift out any small particles, remove the large shells, and then eat the nuts from the bowl. Brand new. I'm going to try zinc alloy next because I don't think aluminum has enough tooth strength.
