Review on Jane Series 5'' Senior Steak Knife Set Of 4 - High Carbon German Stainless Steel & Pakkawood Handle Ergonomics Design by Brian Gopalan

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Decent knives for a low cost.

Steak knives can be expensive, so this set seemed too good to be true promising professional quality for an unbelieveably low price. I have not heard of this brand before and the documentation lists an office in Frankfurt (Germany) and the packaging of course reveals that it’s made in China. So let’s take a look:The sturdy box might as well serve as a storage box, even if the foam inserts would inspire thoughts of a makeshift solution. Still, it’s functional to protect the blades. Those prominently bear the Wallop logo (bear) and a reference to "German DIN 1.4116”. This is the type of steel used for the blades and represents a mainstream steel grade for kitchen knives in Europe. Some sources equate it to the American SS420 grade. It’s softer than some high-end steel (also because of a few percent points lower Chromium), and that should make it less prone to shattering. Of course, that also means it won’t hold an edge as well and may require sharpening more often. That’s really not big issue, but the steel has also a slight tendency to hold a burr when using a steel rather than a stone. The handles are relatively thick and for adult hands. The wood look has become somewhat standard and of course it works fine. Since the wood look is a thin layer, the steel rivets are not polished with the handles in place and a few sharp edges can be felt at the steel transitions. Nothing to be concerned about but not highest quality feeling.Overall, this is a good set of knives and I included a comparison of the blade thickness including a Zwilling Professional ‘S’ steak knife (middle). For the price, one cannot expect the same performance as knives that are typically 5x the cost. However, the difference is mostly in price and is hard to actually feel in normal use. Out of the box, these knives were very sharp and felt like a good buy.

Pros
  • Excellent knife well balanced and razor sharp
Cons
  • The design may not be kid-friendly
