First of all, of all the Summit Brands Iron Out products, Iron Out Powder is the best for our unsealed outdoor concrete underlay. I had to clean a lot. There was a lot of confusion about Iron Out and Super Iron Out so I contacted the manufacturer. I'm told that Super Iron Out was simply renamed Iron Out a few years ago and the formula is exactly the same. Super Iron Out and Iron Out are identical. Situation: The contractor has installed a concrete slab and retaining wall below the deck. The contractor dug the embankment, leveled the ground and poured the concrete. A day later the flood started. The embankment collapsed and mud went everywhere. It stayed on the freshly poured concrete for three weeks before washing away and another two weeks before the contractor attempted to do anything about the stains. My wife is scared of Covid-19 and won't let me wash the dirt. The concrete was heavily soiled with red mud. The contractor tried in vain to clean it with regular cleaning products. Eventually I told them I would take care of it as I have to clean the outside of the house from dirt. Maybe it was a bad decision. I'm disabled, so I'm limited in my abilities. Remember. I started with Iron Out powder. I focused on the front of the stairs, where my wife was most concerned, and a small section of painted concrete wall. This worked very well on the painted concrete wall. Some parts look freshly painted. However, there is one seam that was difficult to clean and one small area I was able to do was smooth it out. If I tried hard enough it would either come out clean or the paint would come off. I've achieved the goal of making it light enough that it can be painted over without leaking. After numerous touch-ups, cleans and washes, I removed about 70% of the stain in front of the stairs, which is not a huge feat when it comes to red mud stains. I also ordered a spray bottle. I have used it in the house. This is another composition, oxalic and fluorosilicic acids. I decided to try it in front of the stairs. This lightened it up another 10% or so. It seemed to work well enough, but it doesn't go very far. It didn't improve the painted concrete wall. Then I tried Iron Out Outdoor. Its composition is similar to a spray, but less concentrated. I focused on other parts of the concrete slab. My first impression is that he did nothing. The reviewer warned that it would not work on wet concrete. After everything was dry I could see that he was able to remove about 40%. Maybe he removed another 5% in front of the stairs. The wall didn't mind. I have decided to use the powder again. I spent most of the morning applying, touching up, brushing, washing and rinsing as best I could. I improved the painted wall but didn't fix the stains. This is acceptable for a repaint. The area in front of the stairs is 95% destroyed. It's almost there. The rest is about 70% gone so it still looks terrible. It was a lot of work to get there. If one is willing to put in enough effort, the powder will eventually work. According to the internet, oxalic acid seems to be a good option. The Iron Out Spray could have worked if it had been enough. Apparently Iron Out Outdoor is not concentrated enough for my application. My next step is to use oxalic acid and water and find the right concentration to make it work.
