Inherent design flaw

I've read reviews of identical (or at least very similar) products where customers have complained about stripping the screws. That's what happened to me with this product. Some of those who complained about snapped screws thought the threads weren't tapped properly. I thought so too at first, but upon closer inspection I realized where the problem lay. As we all know, bicycle stems are completely split from top to bottom in order to have enough clamping force on the steering column. This extension is NOT split far enough to clamp the top screw. So when tightening the top screw, it feels like it's stuck and can't move any further. Tighten a little more and the cheap alloy will come loose. I'm only using it temporarily on a trainer so I wanted it to work. I drilled and tapped a cleaned hole for the larger M6 bolt (I had an M5 on hand), opened up the recessed level to make room for the larger M6 bolt head, widened the slot with a dremel and installed it. Now it works. for my coach. I would NOT use it on road or trail bikes. Its construction can lead to an unsafe condition.

Pros
  • Sports and outdoor activities
Cons
  • The list will be long.
