After reading many reviews I decided on this kayak holder. Judging by the reviews, I was ready for a decent rack with poor assembly instructions. I was half right! The assembly instructions are not only poorly written, they are almost non-existent. It's a page with tiny pictures and vague sentences. BTW, the supplied screws are not the ones pictured in the instructions and it is very confusing which part goes where. After trial and error I finally figured it out (I think), put it together and was done. to mount the carrier on the roof rack of my car. The aluminum trunk base immediately scratched the surface of my trunk, exposing bare metal. I ended up putting a piece of rubber between the base of the holder and the loading bars, but that's obviously a very poor design if it will damage your vehicle during normal use. When folded, the top of the rack hits the roof bars, creating noise and damaging trim elsewhere. I put a piece of pipe insulation there to reduce noise and damage. This mod worked, but in my opinion it shouldn't have been necessary. Then I put my kayaks on the trunk. I immediately noticed that the kayaks weren't resting on the underside of the J-shape mount and weren't making contact with either side of the bottom support. Again a very poor design that doesn't seem like the safest or most secure way to hold kayaks. Then I set to strapping on the kayaks. The straps that come with it are absolute rubbish. There is no other way to describe them. They are very cheap, with no catch at the end. Nowhere in the instructions does it say where to attach the strap, so I guessed. There is no way to tighten the strap once it is attached and tension is simply maintained by the prongs in the clip/clasp portion. I will be replacing these straps with ratchet straps as soon as possible. I've used a kayak tow rack maybe 2 or 3 times and it really works, but after having to modify some parts and buy better straps I really wish I had just bought a higher quality product. Now after multiple uses I can't get it back so I'm stuck on this thing. I have serious doubts as to how this holder will hold up as the plastic parts look like they'll break in the elements. In short, save yourself the hassle and make something better that's designed and built.
