I was attracted to the pattern and color for my almost 4 year old son. When the hat arrived I saw that the "lizard skin" print is actually a transition from light gray to black outline which is really cool. The downside is that the pieces of fabric that make up the perimeter of the hat aren't lined up, so a gray piece was sewn onto the black piece, which kind of ruins the imo effect. (If you look closely at the picture you'll see what I'm talking about on the hat brim, which I didn't notice before I bought it.) If I had seen the hat in person, I might have opted for a different design because of that, but since I opened the package in front of his son, of course he was too excited about his new hat to bother with such details. He has a big head (>95%, I'm lucky) and the big size fits him well with the potential to fit him again next year; It almost fits my head (I'm a grown woman) but fits a little if that helps you decide what size to buy. The hat has good coverage and should protect it well from the sun.
