Exactly right. The old seal was brittle and broke into a dozen pieces. My car lost oil and made a mess. So far it seemed to work. Once you get to the pump, the seal and gasket can be easily replaced. Getting to the pump is work, but it is well within the power of an advanced master. Watch an online video to find out what to do. There are even professionally made videos to show you how. When replacing these parts, install a new timing belt and idler pulley, water pump, thermostat, and thermostat gasket. You have to remove these things to get to the oil pump, so you might as well replace these parts because they'll need to be replaced eventually anyway.
